Different art movements from 1880 - 1950 will be studied through theuse of pictures, historical information, videos, and the creation of theirown art.
Course Competencies:
1) The students will demonstrate an understanding of the different stylesand types of art created by various cultures during the time frame of 1890-1945through the use of pictures, historical information, videos and creationof their own art.
INTERDISCIPLINARY ART - 10TH GRADE (INTER ART 10)

PREREQUISITE: INTERDISCIPLINARY ART 9TH GRADE
The development of art of various cultures will be studied. Informationon history and archaeological studies will be discussed. Students willbe seeing videos, pictures, and also creating their own projects relatedto various cultures.

1) Students will demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationshipbetween selected historical times and how that affected the art of thattime period.
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN (DESN ELEM)

This course satisfies .5 of the fine art requirement for graduationand is the prerequisite for all other coursess in the Art Department. Theelements of art will be studied along with the introduction of variousmedia and skills. Evaluation will be based on written tests as well asstudio work.
Course Competencies:
1) Students will demonstrate an understanding of the use of value (lightand dark) in the creation of an artistic project.
2) Contemporary and Historical Culture: The student will demonstratean understanding of the artistic contributions of selected artists.
3) The student will demonstrate an understanding of positive and negativespace in works of art and develop depth perception in works.

CERAMICS I (CERAMICS 1)

The ceramics portion of this course will cover glazing, hand building,and wheel techniques. Evaluation is based on quality and creativity ofwork and written tests. Students should expect to pay for ceramic clayused.
Course Competencies:
1) The student will demonstrate an understanding of the various basicbuilding techniques available to the ceramist.
2) The student will demonstrate an understanding of a variety of texturesin both additive and subtractive methods.
3) The student will demonstrate an understanding of color to producethe desired effect and finish the piece.
4) The student will demonstrate an understanding of symmetrical applicationsto create a balanced art piece.
CERAMICS II (CERAMICS II)

PREREQUISITES: CERAMICS I
This course is intended for students who have shown an apptitude andinterest in ceramics, this course will explore advanced techniques in handbuilt and wheel thrown constructions, glazing, alternate decorative techniques,and firing techniques. Evaluation is based on quality and creativity ofwork. Students should expect to pay for ceramics clay used.
Course Competencies:
1) The student will demonstrate an understanding of the various advancedbuilding and firing techniques availabe to the ceramist.
2) The student will demonstrate an understanding of creating eithermotion or stasis in his/her ceramics piece.
3) The student will demonstrate an understanding of positive and negativespace within the limitations of the clay.
4) The student will demonstrate an understanding of a shape (2-D) thatwill then become a form (3-D).
COMMERCIAL ART I (COMM ART 1)

This course is designed to introduce students to advertising art. Projectswill include lettering, children's book design, caricatures, and cartooning.Evaluation will be based on tests and project work.

1) Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to arrange theelements of art effectively in their designs.
2) Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to create theirown cartoons and caricatures.
COMMERCIAL ART II (COMM ART II)

PREREQUISITE: COMMERCIAL ART I
The students will be exploring a variety of subjects related to commercialart careers. They will be creating story, song, poem illustrations, alsoproduct packaging design and cartooning. Intended for students who haveshown an appititude and interest in art relating to advertising. This coursewill continue development of the core skills from Commercial Art I withadvanced media and subject matter. Evaluation will be based on tests andproject work.

2) Students will demonstrate an understanding of creative letteringand its use in advertising art.
DRAWING 1 (DRAWING 1)

Students will develop drawing, design, and creativity skills througha variety of media and subject matter. The skills of observation and renderingwill be stressed throughout the course. Evaluation will be based on testsand project work.

2) Students will demonstrate an understanding of the perceptual skillsneeded to translate texture (3-D) to a two-dimensional surface.

PAINTING 1 (PAINTING 1)

Students will work with a variety of wet media including ink wash, temperapaint, and watercolor. Examples from art history will be presented. Studentswill work primarily from observed subject matter. Evaluation will be basedon tests and projects. Some materials must be purchased by students.

1) Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to use color mixing(values, intensity, and tones) in projects.
2) Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to use watercolorpaints using various techniques.
PAINTING 2 (PAINTING 2)

This course will build upon and extend the skills developed in PaintingI. Acrylic painting and mixed media will be introduced and stressed. Evaluationwill be based on tests and projects. Some materials must be purchased bystudents.

1) Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to use acrylicseffectively using different painting styles.
2) Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to paint effectivelandscapes, still-lifes and portraits.
3) Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to create the illusionof depth through the use of placement, overlap, color, size, linear perspective,and detail.
DRAWING AND DESIGN WITH COMPUTERS 1 (COMP DRAW I)

Students will learn to use the IBM computers with emphasis placed onusing the Deluxe Paint II program to create original art work. Projectswill include both hand drawn and computer generated works.
Course Competencies:
1) The students will demonstrate an understanding of how to combinetext and graphics on an individual basis.
2) The students will demonstrate an understanding of how to design creativeadvertising for posters, newspaper ads, etc.
3) The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to use the computeras a tool to alter scanned images creatively.
DRAWING AND DESIGN WITH COMPUTERS 2 (COMP DRAW 2)

PREREQUISITES: D & D WITH COMPUTERS I
Students will be introduced to the IBM compatible computer. Emphasiswill be placed on using the IBM and Deluxe Paint Animation to generategraphic animations. Students will also explore computer/Art related careers.Intended for students who have shown an apptitude and interest in art relatingcomputer drawing and animation. This course will continue development ofthe core skills from Computer Drawing I with advanced media and subjectmatter in art related technology. Evaluation will be based on tests andproject work.
Course Competencies:
1) The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to create 3-dimensionalimages on the computer.
2) The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to create avariety of different types of animations on the computer.
SCULPTURE (SCULPTURE)
SEMESTER CREDIT: 1/2 UNIT

PREREQUISITES: ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
Students will explore a variety of techniques and media unique to three-dimensionalart. Types of sculpture applied in the course include wire, vermiculite/plaster,sand, soap, etc. This course will help the student to visualize objects3-dimensionally and apply this concept to the creation of "sculptures".
Course Competencies:
1) The student will demonstrate an understanding of positive and negativespace in sculpture.
2) The student will demonstrate an understanding of shape (2-D) andthen this will evolve to a form (3-D).
3) The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to use lineto create either motion or stasis in his sculpture.
4) The student will demonstrate an understanding of symmetry and applythis to his sculptures to create harmony or discord.
5) The student will demonstrate an understanding of using color to enhancehis sculpture pieces and create visual stimulation.
6) The student will demonstrate an understanding of adding texturesto create sculpture pieces tactilely and visually.
7) The student will demonstrate an understanding of how darkness andlight visually affects some sculpture pieces.
PRINTMAKING (PRINTMAKING)
SEMESTER 2 CREDIT: 1/2 UNIT

PREREQUISITE: DRAWING 2 IS REQUIRED
Students will explore the different forms of printmaking: relief, intaligo,lithography, monotype, and possibly silkscreen. Some materials must bepurchased by students.
