Located on the campus of Farmington Children's Home, Midwest Learning Center, an alternative school, is a unique partnership between the Farmington R-7 School District and Presbyterian Children Services. This collaboration is a result of the implementation of the Safe School Acts which was approved by the Missouri Legislature in 1996. Supplemental funding of the programs at MLC has been available through the acquisition of Safe Schools Grant Funding. In this collaboration Farmington Children's Home provides the physical campus, custodial staff, a nurse, a therapist and an in-school suspension teacher while the school district employs the educational staff, principal, secretary and a special services coordinator. Together these two partners utilize their strengths to meet the educational, social and transitional needs of at-risk students. Together these two partners utilize their strengths to meet the educational, social and transitional needs of at-risk students. The mission of Midwest Learning Center is to provide educational services for at risk students who have displayed significant difficulties succeeding in the traditional school setting. The school is made up of three independent programs designed to help meet the unique educational, social, and transitional needs of students on a variety of levels. These three programs are the Intensive Services Units (ISU), MLC Long Term, and the Farmington Extended Alternative Track/Farmington Alternative Short Term (F.E.A.T/F.A.S.T.) Programs. Midwest Learning Center serves up to 78 students per day; 58 of these students are in either the Intensive Services Units or in the MLC Long Term and the remaining 20 make up the F.E.A.T/F.A.S.T.programs. |
